Job Description — Commissioning Editor

CGP is the UK’s No. 1 educational publisher, selling over 10 million books and digital products each year. Our range of over 1,000 titles is designed to make learning and revision fun for students across all age groups from pre-school to post-16. Unusually within the industry, much of CGP’s content is created by our in-house editorial team. With many exciting publishing plans in the pipeline, we’re now creating a new team to find and commission authors, illustrators and other external content providers.

The Role

This is an exciting opportunity to join a new team and influence new ways of working at CGP. Reporting to the Head of Publishing Strategy, you’ll be responsible for commissioning and delivering new publishing across all age ranges and subject areas. This role would particularly suit those with commissioning experience in the education sector.

Ownerships and Responsibilities

As Commissioning Editor you’ll:

  • Work with colleagues to set up processes for a new team
  • Define the vision and business case for new publishing, and communicate this to colleagues
  • Gain approval for new titles and draw up budgets and project plans
  • Find and commission consultants, authors, illustrators and other external experts as appropriate
  • Review and manage authors' and other external contributors' work
  • Work with CGP's in-house design and marketing teams to ensure every product is on brand
  • Arrange training for Editors or other colleagues as required
  • Oversee the day-to-day work of internal Editors
  • Ensure final products are high quality, meet your 'vision' and fulfil a project’s original objectives
  • Report regularly to senior colleagues, including the MD, on the progress of your projects
  • Evaluate the success of your projects, learning from past experience
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of the team’s output and working practices

Personal Qualities / Attributes

You’ll have a sound track record of finding great authors on a range of publishing projects. Ideally with a STEM background, you’ll be adaptable and able to apply your commissioning skills to any subject or age group within the education system. You’ll have high standards — without being a perfectionist! You’ll also be:

  • Outgoing — confident and able to influence others
  • Creative and full of ideas, with the determination to see them through
  • Flexible and enthusiastic
  • Open to, and thrive on, challenges to your thinking
  • Highly articulate and numerate
  • Great at cultivating and managing internal and external relationships
  • Able to travel to meetings (e.g. with authors and schools)
