In summer 2018, Edexcel announced plans to make some small changes to its GCSE English Language exam. These changes affect Section A of Paper 2: Non-Fiction and Transactional Writing, and are intended to make the paper more accessible for students. They’ll only come into effect from summer 2019 onwards, so if you’re resitting the exam in November 2018, you won’t be affected.
Here’s what’s changing in Section A of Paper 2:
- The time limit for Paper 2 will increase to 2 hours and 5 minutes.
- Question 2 will require students to pick out information from one of the texts, rather than focussing on the writer’s use of language. This question will still be worth 2 marks.
- Question 5 will also change focus to picking out information from one of the texts, rather than use of language. This question will still be worth 1 mark.
- Extra instructions will be added to Question 3 and Question 7b. These will give pupils more guidance on what to include in their answers. Both questions will still be worth the same number of marks.
If you’re preparing for exams from summer 2019 onwards, we’ve produced some handy updates to our Revision Guide and Workbook, which reflect Edexcel’s changes.
