What will I be doing?
You’ll be working your magic on educational resources written by teachers and the CGP editorial team, making them look beautiful, interesting and fun! Typesetting, finding and editing graphics, correcting typos — that sort of thing.
Will I be employed by CGP?
No — you’ll have a freelance contract (for up to 6 months) with one week’s notice on either side.
What’s the hourly rate? And for how many hours?
It’s £12.50/hour (7½ hours a day). We work Monday to Friday, 9am – 5.30pm, with one hour for lunch.
Can I work from home – even if I’m local?
We can chat about that later, so please mention it on the application form so we don’t forget.
Can I work part time?
When you apply, please tell us what hours you can do and we can chat about it later. But you would have to be available for calls and meetings (virtual or otherwise) during our standard working hours.
Can I do some of my hours at weekends?
Yes, that’s fine, as long as you’re also available for calls etc. during the week.
Do I need any training? How long will it take? Will I get paid for this?
Yes, of course we’ll pay you for any training needed (same hourly rate). We’ll expect you to be an InDesign user already but you might need some training in the graphics packages we use (be sure to tell us about your skills and experience when you apply). We’ll need to teach you our unique style, so training will probably take a few days.
How/where will I do my training?
We’ll teach you all you need to know (and provide tea and biscuits) at one of our lovely offices — just like our employees. If you’re not able to get to the Lake District, we can discuss remote training.
Do I need my own equipment?
We’ll sort everything out for you if you’re based in our offices. But if you’re working remotely, you’ll need a laptop, PC or Mac with MS Office and InDesign installed.
Is it just InDesign or do I need any other graphics software?
It’s mainly InDesign and some related add-ons but we also use a variety of software packages, including CorelDRAW. Please let us know if you’re already familiar with this software package.
Will I get to make my own graphics?
Almost certainly! You’ll be working to a brief, and we do have a very particular style — but there’ll be opportunities for your creative side to shine.
Who’ll have the copyright?
CGP will own the copyright for anything you create for us.
How will I know if I’ve been selected? What’s the interview process?
We’ll drop you an email to let you know if you’ve been selected for a short test and Zoom interview. So the quicker you apply, the better…
When can I start?
If you’re successful, you could be starting within a matter of weeks.
Will I be working by myself or as part of a team?
You’ll probably be part of a small team, with a CGP employee managing your work.
Can I have a holiday in the summer?
Ooohhh holidays — we remember them! Yes of course you can have time off but if you’re planning to be away for several weeks, that probably won’t work. If you’ve got long holidays booked, just tell us when you apply.
Can I work for other publishers at the same time as working for CGP?
The work you do for us needs to be unique to us — and you mustn’t have conflicts of interest. We’ll be asking you to sign a Confidentiality Agreement before you start so if you’re concerned about this, please just say.
